For entrepreneur Chip Conk, Santa Barbara, California is the place to be. When it came time to go to college, Conk decided to study in the scenic, tourist hotspot of Santa Barbara, which is located on the Central Coast of California. At UCSB, Mr. Conk fully realized his business acumen. Most people typically start businesses after they have graduated from college and have had some relevant work experience behind them – but not Chip Conk. He started his first business while he was still a student. In the early1980s, Mr. Chip Conk headed up the operations for a contest where the UC Santa Barbara sorority girls voted for the boys they thought were the best looking. Conk had the winners’ portraits taken and used the photos in a calendar, which he was able to sell on campus. Because of the success of the campus calendar concept, Mr. Chip Conk decided to develop his own off-campus calendar business that he called Day Dream Publishing. Chip sought the help of his siblings, Chris Conk and Joellyn Conk to help operate his Santa Barbara-based business. Day Dream Publishing gained popularity by selling generic-themed calendars, but eventually the company was able to sell calendars depicting animated characters, sports figures, supermodels, musicians and television stars. Soon, the calendars manufactured at Day Dream Publishing were sold at many chain stores in the country, including Target, Wal-Mart, Kmart, B. Dalton and Waldenbooks. Now, Chip Conk is the president and CEO for medical real estate business Montecito Medical Investment Company. At Montecito Medical Investment Company, employees develop and acquire hospitals, surgery centers and medical office buildings. Mr. Chip Conk currently resides in Santa Barbara, California.
